Stress- The two sides of a coin

Haven’t we all heard people around us complaining about “STRESS”? Usually, this rings an alarm in
our head, we plaster an imaginary “HELP” on them ðŸ˜·. Generally, the idea
associated with stress is negative but as said everything in small amounts is good thus the term
eustress comes into play. It is the ideal amount of stress required by an individual to reach his/her
own peak performance. Eustress is a push that moves us from our state of inertia.
That means STRESS IS GOOD? Yes, it is until it becomes distressed. Distress is the villain ðŸ˜ˆ
In our story, it leads to the body's wear and tear, which ultimately leads to burnout.

Licensed professional counselor Casey Lee, “Eustress produces positive feelings of excitement,
fulfillment, meaning, satisfaction, and well-being,”
This stress stimulates a person to think actively which makes him more confident and adequate. The
duration of this stress is short, it feels exciting and is within our coping ability. Eustress in a way adds
Taste in our life gives us the motivation to come out of our comfort zone and acts as a catalyst in
one’s life. Without stress, one will feel bored out of life.
Eustress also helps us improve emotionally, psychologically, and physically. It teaches us to believe in
yourself, which improves our self-efficacy and as we bounce back it teaches us resilience. Next time
you feel yourself getting lazy, challenge yourself but remember don’t exert yourself.

On the other hand, stress, as we all know, can be detrimental to the development of a human being. Prolonged stress can result in anxiety, depression and worsen or cause physical illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. According to The American Institute of Stress, 77% of people experience stress that affects their physical health. Therefore, this suggests that it is widespread and persists irrespective of age, sex, a religion of an individual. Work, financial problems, personal relationships are some root causes of feeling overwhelmed. To add more, when one is stressed, they perform unwanted behaviors (signs and symptoms) such as feeling on edge, fidgeting, moving their legs which can make them and their surroundings uncomfortable. Due to this, they are not on their best behavior, and this causes limitations. Stress can be a driving factor of motivation but can also be a limitation in various cases. Thus, it might lead individuals to give up and question their abilities, therefore, reducing self-esteem. On a final note, the optimal level of stress is subjective. Achieving these optimal levels will cause one to be a better version of themselves and react appropriately to the 'fight and flight' situations. One needs to rectify if stress interferes with their daily life and makes it troublesome. Lastly, as Edna Ferber quotes, "Perhaps too much of everything is as bad as too little." concludes the topic we discussed, <3

  1. A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience.

As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question.

Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired

“How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter.

It depends on how long I hold it.

If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem.

If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm.

If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed.

In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water.

Think about them for a while and nothing happens.

Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt.

And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses, upsets and anything that doesn’t feel good to you as early as you can.

    Put all your burdens down.

Don’t carry them throughout your day or even an hour or more than the few moments it takes to notice that you are feeling in a way you don’t want.

Remember to put the glass down!
